FSI & UPS: Partners & Neighbors

November 2019 - Austell, GA – Seth Gilland - FSI works with a variety of carriers to ensure our clients orders are delivered on time and efficiently.  We have strategically located our facilities near these carriers’ hubs and sorting centers to enable best in class time in transit and pickup times.  One of these carriers, UPS, has been a vital partner of FSI for many years.  Recently, members of the FSI team were invited over to the brand new, state of the art SMART facility which opened in 2018.  This facility is truly an engineering masterpiece and we are fortunate to be just around the corner from it.  We were met by our UPS Account Manager to start the tour with a couple of other UPS management members.  Below are some highlights of the facility and tour. 

UPS’s new southeast regional super hub in Atlanta is the company’s second largest ground package processing facility in the United States and the fourth largest package operation globally. Primarily serving the southeast United States, the facility is one of the new regional sortation and processing centers that provide customers additional market access and capacity when using UPS’s global smart logistics network.  The Atlanta hub will process via a highly orchestrated series of conveyors, chutes, belts and ramps, into waiting trailers for transfer to another UPS location, or into package delivery vehicles bound for area businesses and residents.   Here are some key statistics of the facility:

Site Area: 321 acres
Building Area: 1.2 million square-feet (more than 19 football fields)
Sort Capacity: More than 100,000 packages an hour (about 1,700 a minute). Enough packages to stretch three times the height of Mount Everest (29,029 ft.) in one hour.
Processing Time: 600 feet-per-minute
Capital Investment: More than $400 million
Permanent Jobs: 3,000 full- and part-time (1,250 full-time equivalent)
Tractor-Trailer Staging: More than 970 trucks

Length of Conveyors: 18 miles

Efficiency: 30-35% more efficient than older, more manual facilities
