Lithia Springs, GA - April 23, 2021 – Gifford Pace –When the EF4 tornado ripped a path 39 miles long and up to a mile wide, FSI teamed up with Samaritan’s Purse to help the residents of Newnan, GA. For 53 minutes, the storm wreaked havoc across the counties of Heard, Coweta and Fayette Counties. It began at 11:37pm Monday, 3/26, and ended around 12:30am Tuesday, 3/27. Long enough to destroy homes and businesses, topple trees and power poles, and even cause extensive damage to Newnan High School.
While many organizations are helping with donations and relief, we went multiple weekends with various groups of employees, family and church members and worked with Samaritan’s Purse. We had worked with them before on Hurricane Michael relief in February 2019 and they were just as effective and efficient this time as then. We were assigned to a team after a safety briefing and then spent the day helping clear debris. We worked on multiple houses depending on the amount of work to be done at each one. Not exciting work, but necessary.
In fact, that’s only part of the story. It’s really about connecting with others in their time of need. One homeowner was a retired social worker and had been on several relief trips during her career. She was extremely grateful and said that “I’ve been in your shoes many times, and never thought I’d be the one needing help.” We’re glad to respond to the call. It certainly won’t be the last.
