FSI Supports Local Kiwanis Club with Triathlon/Duathlon Participation

Lithia Springs – 7/1/22 – Forrest Marbutt - Every few months, FSI tries to participate in a company-wide charitable event.  If we can find a way to have fun doing it and get a little exercise, then that makes it even better.  In some cases in the past, we have done some mud run obstacle races, but in most cases, we do a 5k run.  For this particular event, FSI tried something new as a group that most have never done before, and that was a triathlon or duathlon.

The Sweetwater Creek Triathlon/Duathlon benefits the Kiwanis Club of Douglas County, which works to help various youth organizations throughout the county.   Some of these organizations are Special Olympics, Boys & Girls Club, Boy Scouts, A Gift of Love, S.H.A.R.E. House, and many others.  Each year the club sponsors Kids Christmas Special which serves needy youth in elementary school by providing Christmas gifts for them and their families.

For most of FSI’s participants for this event, they had never done a triathlon or a duathlon.  For the triathlon, it was a 200 yard swim, 10 mile bike, then a 5k run.  Some weren’t too interested in the swimming, so they opted for the duathlon, which was a 5k run, 10 mile bike, then another 5k.  It was held at beautiful Sweetwater Creek State Park.

It was a great day for the event, and we all had a ton of fun.  Cheering each other on as we crossed paths throughout the event was something I’ll never forget.  Some of us even managed to place in the top 3 in our age groups and earn some medals.  Other than supporting a charitable cause, I was most proud of being able to help some employees accomplish something they didn’t think they could do.  One of our participants had a rough go at COVID last year that included pneumonia and hospital stay, so to see him be able to complete this race shows how far back to good health he’s come.  We also had fun wearing our medals and race shirts to work the following week and talking it up amongst the rest of employees.  Now we have a whole lot more interest in doing it again sometime in the future.  Let’s hope so.  Until then, it’s back to pick/pack/ship and kit packing.  The show must go on!
